  • Acrylic shower doors can stand up to some abrasion. Abrasive cleaning tools such as scourers and scrubbing brushes offer the best chance of sloughing off tough soap scum. You also need something soft and absorbent such as a sponge, fabric rag or microfiber cloth for rinsing off cleaning products and wiping away watermarks. Used laundry dryer sheets are mildly abrasive and useful as disposable cleaning cloths. A squeegee is the most effective tool for a final wipe down after cleaning, but a dry rag or old towel also works.

Cleaning acrylic shower doors is a somewhat daunting task, especially if you've put off doing the job for so long that a noticeable layer of soap scum has developed. It's a lot of surface area to tackle if you're cleaning the tub and walls at the same time.

For a thorough shower door cleaning, you probably need to get into the shower or tub to reach the insides of the doors, where most of the water spots, soap scum and general build-up occurs. If you have sliding acrylic shower doors -- the kind that hinge at the top and overlap in the middle -- you might be able to remove them from their frame and take them elsewhere to clean. Place old towels underneath the removed doors and lie the doors flat to clean them, which is easier on the arms than cleaning the doors while they're vertical. If you have to get inside the tub, wear nonslip shoes. Also wear old clothes and rubber gloves, especially if you are using products containing bleach. Make sure the bathroom is ventilated as much as possible.

Acrylic can be shaped in a wider variety of shapes than other glass doors. Acrylic shower doors are often less expensive than glass (not like the above acrylic enclosure).
